Brand new bear sanctuary opens today

Dear WSPA Supporter

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is overjoyed to tell you that our brand new bear sanctuary, built near the town of Balkasar in Pakistan, has officially opened today (1 November 2010).

Almost a year ago, WSPA wrote to our supporters asking for Sohrab at the Balkasar sanctuary your help. We needed to build a second sanctuary in Pakistan, large enough to provide a home for the 70 or so bears we knew were trapped in the blood sport of bear baiting. Our existing sanctuary, Kund Park, was full and without a new sanctuary, we couldn’t hope to rescue any more bears. Thousands of you responded, quickly raising enough funds to cover the building costs and construction began shortly afterwards.

WSPA works with local partner, the Bioresource Research Centre (BRC), to end bear baiting in Pakistan. Led by Dr Fakhar-i-Abbas and funded by WSPA, the team at BRC have been able to create this safe haven for bears.

The new sanctuary actually welcomed its first residents – Babu, Maylu and Sohrab (pictured above) - a few months before the official opening. Sadly, these bears were the only three to survive the devastating floods that swept through Pakistan earlier this year, destroying our original Kund Park sanctuary. Babu, Maylu and Sohrab are now enjoying life at the Balkasar sanctuary, roaming its seven hectares and playing in its many pools and dens.

With the sanctuary ready, we now want to press on with our plans to rescue more bears and have recently written to our supporters, asking for your help.

Thank you to everyone who donated to our bear sanctuary appeal last year. It is because of you that Sohrab, Babu and Maylu now have a safe and happy home. If you would like to help WSPA and BRC rescue more bears, please give to our bear rescue appeal today.

On behalf of the bears, thank you.

PS. Fakhar has written to WSPA with information on four bears that he is desperate to rescue, given the extent of their physical and mental suffering. Time is not on the side of the bears - each day they are made to fight against trained dogs is another day that risks their lives.  You can help now by making a donation to our bear rescue appeal.
